Don’t Let Criticism Stop You From Achieving

Don’t Let Criticism Stop You From Achieving

” Working at Pixar you learn the really honest, hard way of making a great movie, which is to surround yourself with people who are much smarter than you, much more talented than you, and incite constructive criticism; you’ll get a much better movie out of it.”  Andrew Stanton

Don’t Let Criticism Stop You From Achieving

There’s a saying that says if you’re not receiving criticism, you’re not trying very hard. Criticism comes in many forms and from many directions. There are of course two ways to handle criticism; you can let it derail you or you can deal with it. Here’s how to deal with criticism effectively.

Step One: Take a deep breath and adjust your perspective.

It’s easy to get defensive and to automatically feel attacked when you receive criticism. However, if you can adjust your perspective as you’re receiving the negative feedback, it’s easier to actually hear what the person is saying.

Step Two: Allow yourself time to evaluate the criticism.

Now, here’s the key. If you’re in the middle of a project or task that requires your full attention, you’ll want to cultivate the ability to set the criticism and your reaction to it aside until you can think about it clearly and without emotion. Once you’re able to give the criticism space in your thoughts, try to separate your emotional response from your logical one. Sometimes, criticism has validity. No one’s perfect and even if you’re darn close, there’s probably room for improvement.

Step Three: Be Conscious of your Thoughts.

So here’s the deal: we’re great as emotional beings at letting our thoughts take over. After receiving criticism, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed with negative emotions. We can feel angry with the person who criticized us and frustrated that our efforts weren’t received better. Our self-esteem can plummet and we may feel as if our goals and dreams are never going to be attained.

However, as emotional beings we also have control over our thoughts. The key is to become conscious of them first, to acknowledge the thoughts we’re having and then to change them. You can decide to focus on the positive. You can decide that your dreams and goals are worth achieving and you can decide that even though you received some criticism, it doesn’t have to ruin your day. It doesn’t even have to ruin the moment.

Finally, take that criticism and put it where it belongs.

If there’s some validity to it, then find out what you need to do to improve. If you’re unsure if the criticism has any truth to it, then seek a second and even a third opinion – but only if the criticism is important. If the criticism is totally off base, toss it in the garbage can like moldy cheese and let it go.

Because if you’re receiving criticism, it means you’re taking action. You’re doing something daring, worthwhile and challenging. And that’s always a good thing!

Perfectionism is Not a Quest for the Best ~ Give it Up

Perfectionism is Not a Quest for the Best“Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is a pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough – that we should try again” ~ Julia Cameron

Since this is the month of the Virgo, I want to talk about perfectionism. I am a Virgo and I live with a couple of Virgos. All three of us have those Virgo traits of saying things like “If I don’t have time to do it right, I don’t want to do it at all.” or “This just isn’t up to par with my normal meal.” or “I don’t get B’s on my assignments.”

Perfectionism can rob you of your self-esteem, undermine your relationships, and keep you from enjoying life. It’s often a lifelong habit that is hard to break, but a little bit of effort can go a long way toward changing the perfectionist pattern. Here are some tips if perfectionism applies to you:

1. Weigh the Cons

List all of the ways in which your perfectionism is hurting you, your family and friends. This exercise will help motivate you to make a change.

2. Take Note

Try to document your perfectionist, negative thoughts throughout the day. If this is impractical, then at the end of the day think back on your day, remember any feelings of failure or inadequacy, and write down your thoughts at the time. That way, you’ll become more aware of these detrimental thoughts when they resurface.

3. Think Positive

Mitigate your tendency to focus on the negative by making a conscious effort to notice all that is good about your own and others’ efforts. If you notice something negative about yourself or your work, find five or so positive qualities to counterbalance those thoughts.

4. Change your Inner Voice

Silence (or at least muffle) that negative self-talk by taking some concrete steps to change your focus.

For example:

  • Keep a daily journal of your actions and feelings about those actions. Do this for a few days and then examine them. Did you say things like, “I could have done better?” or “I hate to submit this until it’s perfect” ? Notice what you said to yourself and go back and give yourself a rewarding comment about the actions that you took for those days.
  • An Example of your Action / Feeling Journal  might look like this:
    • Monday Actions: Called 3 Potential Clients and Wrote a Blog Post
    • Monday Feelings:  I hate calling clients they’ll think I am begging them for work. I am a terrible writer and nobody is reading my blog posts
    • Monday Comments: “Hey I did call clients and had a great conversation with so and so that is turning into a big project. I am a good writer and at least my mom reads my blog posts.”
  • When negative thoughts come to mind, acknowledge them, write them down, and let them go.
    • Replace negative statements with milder, neutral or positive statements
    • Change negative statements to questions – for example, “I can’t do this!” could become “How can I do this?”

5. Take Baby Steps

Instead of setting unreasonable goals as perfectionists tend to do, reduce your big goals into smaller, bite-sized objectives, and reward yourself when you meet them. This will help you forgive your mistakes more easily, helps you to enjoy the process, and actually increases the likelihood that you’ll achieve your big goal.

6. Stop and Smell the Roses

Focus less on results and more on the process of reaching your goals. Some ways to do this might include joining a group working toward the same goal or keeping a journal of your feelings and what you learn along the way. Even if you don’t meet your goal, you can look back and see what you have gained in just working toward a goal.

7. Take Criticism Constructively

Instead of perceiving criticism as an attack and reacting defensively, receive it as a helpful suggestion for improving your performance. Then your less-than-perfect performances can become stepping stones toward achieving excellence.

8. Look at the Big Picture

Concentrate less on the little imperfections and more on what matters. For example, giving a birthday party for a friend matters much more than the fact that your dishes didn’t match your tablecloth.

So give yourself a break, embrace your gifts and talents, and correct those little lies that run through your head. A concerted – but not necessarily perfect! – effort to change your perfectionist habits will go a long way toward achieving your ultimate goal: a happier you.

Creative Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Small businesses don’t have the same marketing muscle as large businesses. A small business simply doesn’t have the advertising budget needed to build a “big” brand and to gain recognition in the market through that brand.

So how is a small business to compete with the “big guns?”

The answer is by utilizing effective communication strategies with their customers.

As a small business owner, communicating with your customers should be at the top of your agenda. Your customers will give you feedback which may help you improve the business. And if you use the right communication strategies you can also cement your business in their minds so that they become repeat customers.

Unfortunately, all too often small businesses miss this step and conduct themselves in a manner more reminiscent of large corporate companies. This can spell disaster for the small business owner.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid this trap and communicate effectively with your customers.

#1 – Ask for Feedback

Good or bad, feedback from customers can be the saving grace for any small business. It will help you improve, tweak, keep what’s working and get rid of what isn’t working within the business. You can ask customers to fill in a simple survey card or a fun poll about their preferences and so on. It may help to make the feedback anonymous to make it easier for the customer to state their true feelings about the business.

#2 – Keep in Touch

Even if the customer was impressed with your business in the first instance, it’s easy for them to forget about it or go somewhere more convenient when they’re in a rush. However, if you stay at the forefront of your customer’s mind then you’ll up the chances of them becoming repeat customers.

Send your customers reminders about your business and news about special offers which will benefit them. You can also offer repeat customers a discount voucher and other incentives to get them to come back to you. But keep in mind that the best incentive for customers to return is often a simple “thank you” and great customer service.

You can do this by treating each and every customer as though they are your only customer and making them feel special. Send out birthday or Christmas cards to your customers. Let them know you appreciate them by sending a simple thank you letter, perhaps with a discount voucher inside. And in some cases a small thank you gift may be a worthwhile investment.

Treating customers well is one sure way to stand out from the competition.

#3 – Get Creative

Many businesses use the same old boring marketing strategies. Why not stand out from the crowd by “juicing” up your marketing? Humor goes a long way in marketing – come up with a funny campaign that will grab your customer’s attention.

What may seem “crazy” to some can catch the eyes of potential customers or clients and get them interested in your business. The first step is always getting the customer through the door – a creative marketing campaign will help you do this. Once they’re in the door it’s up to you to wow them with your services.

Communicating effectively with customers doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s all about connecting with people on a more personal level and setting up your business to help you customers and to provide value. A few simple strategies can help you achieve this and stand out from the competition.

Honesty is the Best Policy – When There is Money in It

“If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.” ~ Mark Twain

Honesty in business is important. In the small business world, news quickly gets around about business owners who value their customers and conduct themselves in an ethical way – the same holds true for businesses that are not so ethical.

In starting my own business, I have had to learn the hard way that not everyone is honest in their business dealings.

In a competitive world where small businesses need to stand out in order to survive, honesty is even more important. Here are a few tips for running an ethical and honest business:

1. Treat People With Respect

You’ve probably been taught to treat people how you’d like to be treated. The same holds true in business. Customers will notice when they are being treated fairly and respectfully. If a customer has an issue or is upset, it’s even more important that we listen to them and ensure they are properly taken care of. Your customer’s reaction is simply a sign that they are frustrated and angry.

2. Honesty is the Best Policy – When There is Money in It

Mark Twain said this best. This saying was common knowledge in Missouri where I grew up.

Whether it comes down to a testimonial for your website or deciding what fee to charge for your service, it pays to be honest and fair in all you do. Misuse of information or a testimonial can come back and bite you, and it’s just not worth the hassle in the first instance.

You can always start out with testimonials from family members or friends which are still honest. When it comes to fees for services, it’s not to say you should undercharge for your services or necessarily use other businesses as a guide, but do think about your customers and whether or not you feel your fees are truly fair all around.

3. Don’t Cut Corners

If a customer is paying good money for a set service then they will expect to receive that service to a high level. It’s important to maintain a high standard and not cut corners – whether it’s in regards to products or services. Taking shortcuts can lead to business disaster and a not so positive reputation.

4. Give Back

Not everyone will agree that all businesses inherently have a responsibility to their communities and those less fortunate, but wouldn’t the world be a better place if perhaps they did? Not every person can manage to start a profitable business or work at a high-paying job. Giving back to the community, even in the smallest of ways, can make a difference to all involved. Volunteer your time with causes that are valuable to you and your business.

And you don’t have to be a large business to give back; a little goes a long way. Donating to a book fund at your local school or helping to build a community garden, giving back can take ways in many forms and is beneficial to everyone. If financially it’s not viable for you to give back, how about offering an entrepreneurship to a local teen who would like to start a business? With a little thought, it’s easy to find a way to make a difference.

5. Stick to Your Word

This is a fundamental part of good business ethics. Whether it’s meeting your deadlines or following through with a venture you agreed to, sticking to your word is always the best policy. People will come to respect you for your dependability and honesty. Customers are more likely to want to do business with someone they know they can rely on and you’ll feel better for accomplishing something that is often not easy for many.

Sometimes things happen and it’s difficult for us to follow through but wherever possibly try your best. It will pay dividends in the long run. Not to mention it simply being the right thing to do.

Smart Ways of Turning Ideas into Action

“Everyone who has ever taken a shower has had an idea. It’s the
person who gets out of the shower, dries off, and does something
about it that makes a difference.”
― Nolan Bushnell Author of the Book a
Whack on the Side of the Head

Ideas are all around us, and nothing feels more exciting than coming up with a fantastic idea that you know will absolutely work. The difficult part for most, however, is taking those ideas and turning them into an actionable plan.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

#1 – Write out a Plan of Action

You have an idea – fantastic! Now is a good time to write out a fail-proof plan of how you will act on that idea. Detail in writing how your idea will work and break down the process into small steps. Having an action plan to follow makes the process of action much easier.

#2 – Ditch the Fear

So many people have wonderful ideas that never come into fruition because of fear. Fear can really be a dirty word for many of us. It can stop us from following our dreams and acting on our ideas. Don’t let fear of failure stop you from making your ideas a success.

Remind yourself that in the big scheme of things you really don’t have a lot to loose. What is the worst that could happen? And don’t worry about the fear of what people will say. People will always have something to say. Take pride in the fact that you have the strength to follow through on your dreams. The reality is you get bonus points for even trying in the first instance, so you really can’t go wrong.

#3 – Slice the Salami

Have you ever gone to friend’s home for a get together and they had some sliced cheese and smoked sausage set out with crackers? It looked easy to try a bite. What if they just laid the whole salami on the table and did not leave a knife or crackers? Would anyone partake in the salami? Probably Not. Why? It looked like too much work. Make it easier on your self and break tasks down into bite sized pieces.

There is nothing more frightening than looking into all the little nagging details of a business idea. So many successful entrepreneurs have said that had they really thought through their business they wouldn’t have taken action.

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t plan or research your idea, but be careful not to get hung up on all the small details. Remember all the niggling details can easily be taken care of. You can research all the information you need when the time comes. And anything you can’t do, you can hire others to do.

The trick here is to proceed with small steps. Take each part of your business plan and idea and take a small action step each day. Don’t get too hung up on the big picture and simply keep moving forwards one step at a time.

Turning ideas into action can be difficult and even scary for some, but the rewards can be immense. Start slowly and work your way up, and you’ll soon be on your way to success.

Nine Ways to Improve Your Website Credibility

When it comes to convincing or motivating purchases you can’t go wrong with credibility. When you’re believable and trustworthy, people will trust you and be more inclined to make a purchase. If you are an internet entrepreneur, your website has to do much of the talking for you – your website has to demonstrate credibility. Let’s take a look at ways to improve your website.

Nine Ways To Improve Your Website Credibility

1. Cut the Hype

Make sure the claims and promises you make are backed up by evidence. Evidence can be in the form of testimonials, raw data, facts and statistics or reviews. Always back up your promises and claims and if you can’t back them up, don’t make them. Consumers are too savvy to buy into it.

2. Testimonials, Reviews, and Endorsements

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have an endorsement on your website from the leading personality in your industry? Imagine if you were in the crafting industry and Martha Stewart herself put her name and endorsement on your products, you’d be rolling in the dough. So how do you get testimonials, reviews and endorsements to put on your website? Well sometimes customers are so pleased with your products or services that they happily offer them up, however most of the time you’re going to have to ask for them. Send an email or pick up the phone and talk to customers who you know had a positive experience.

3. Make Your Website Look Professional

Being an experienced online surfer I’m sure you can quickly recognize a website that’s just trying to grab a few bucks versus one that has time, effort and professional attention put into it. Make sure your website is easy on the eyes, easy to navigate and looks and feels professional.

4. Update Your Content Frequently

Ever visit a blog and it’s been a month or more since any content has been posted? That’s a sure sign that the business owner has dropped the ball. Even regurgitating posts is better than nothing however a stream of valuable and relevant content is a great way to improve your website credibility.

5. Represent, Promote and Endorse Credible Products, Services and Companies

If you are an affiliate marketer, information marketer or have partnered with someone, make sure everyone you represent reflects the image you want to portray. One unethical business partner can pull you down.

6. Join an Association or Organization or Win an Award

We love to see stamps of approval and online there are a number of options. Simply joining an organization in your industry and placing that organizations logo on your website with a “Member of….” will help boost your credibility.

7. Be Present

Make sure you have a presence on your website. That means an about us page, contact information, and any information or background you can list that adds to your online credibility the better. If you’ve studied with an expert, taken a course, won an award, have years of experience or have helped someone accomplish something relevant to your niche, share it. People want to know there’s a real live person behind the website.

8. Pay Attention to Detail

Typos, grammar errors, spelling errors, misaligned formatting and broken links all give the appearance of sloppiness and detract from your credibility. Users are aware that mistakes happen and don’t judge too harshly however the fewer mistakes you have, the better.

9. Don’t Make your Website Look Like a Giant Advertisement

Too many ads on your website will make it look like a giant advertisement or a billboard at the back of a coffee shop covered with banner ads and classified ads. Advertising is expected and often appreciated on a website however it can’t be the main focus. Credibility is earned through hard work, dedication and an attention to detail. When you start with the right mindset and intentions, it’ll show through your website and your customers and visitors will recognize you for the outstanding expert you are.

Creative Branding Strategies For Entrepreneurs – Why Branding Matters

Creative Branding Strategies for Entrepreneurs

Why Branding Matters

Recently, I heard a young entrepreneur raving about her new website and how excited she was about the colors, the look, the feel… She said she felt as though she could finally “step into her brand” and it totally represented her as she wanted to be seen.

While internet branding offers huge opportunities for business, in order for it to be good one needs to draw in and engage its buyers.  This isn’t always easy on the internet with so many websites vying for our attention.

Design & branding are not as simple as putting up a site and adding your company logo and tagline. Your creative branding strategy must make your brand noticeable and evident.

Creative Branding Strategies are important for any business as a company’s brand is what separates it from its competition. In today’s computer age, it’s essential for most businesses to have an internet presence to remain competitive. An effective brand helps bring awareness to your unique business providing and drive buyer demand.

Branding uses hi-tech tools to produce a web presence for your business. Graphics and animation, a compelling web copy, and overall site design that reflect your company are a few of the significant factors that will bring your brand alive. A magnetic site that helps buyers easily and quickly find the info they need is the key to getting buyer interaction and eventually, business. Your branding plan ought to include great design factors and ease of operation to produce an effective total impression.

Branding is much more than simply a thoughtful logo or slogan and it’s more than simply a unique color scheme.

Be your brand

Make certain your company truly reflects what your brand associates you with. For instance, if one of the traits your brand identifies your branding strategiescompany with is graciousness, be gracious. Consider The Ritz Carlton’s Credo,

“We are Ladies and Gentlemen Serving Ladies and Gentlemen.”

This means every employee from the front desk clerk all the way up to the CEO has to live your brand.

Remember the importance of branding. If you haven’t already started a brand for your company, now may be just the time. Develop these easy techniques in the promotion of your distinct brand.

Make your brand as unparalleled as possible. Catch the eye of the world by producing something different- something that individuals have not yet seen. Rather than doing what has already been done, go the opposite direction and be unique. Don’t forget the legal dangers of violation of copyright related to copying or stealing from another firm’s invention.

Display Stability

Take time in the development procedure to found your brand and accomplish the look you truly want. It’s better to spend adequate time in the early stages fine-tuning your design to the desired outcome, rather than to play with it after it’s been displayed to the public. Changing your brand, and all that’s involved with it, including colors, slogans, logos, and tag lines, doesn’t support an picture of trustworthiness and dependability.  Stability can be upheld with branding.

Make Every Communication Count

While some businesses operate primarily online, there are always opportunities to promote your business by making sure your logo and colors are represented on all of your stationary and envelopes, your business cards, t-shirts, newsletters, invoices, pens, packaging and bags.  Think of all these items as mini-billboards for your business.

Outrageous Give Aways – Make Your Business Memorable

Give your brand away to the public with various promotional products. You are able to help your brand to reach the consumers by distributing precious, yet low-cost, items. Promotional products encourage buyers to remember your brand and your gift each time they are utilized.

Your LOGO as an ICON

In website design, an icon can be used for going back or to the next page, for printing the page consider how your Logo can be turned into an Icon for viewers to take the next step.  Also using your logo / icon to make sure a visitor knows they are on your website is important because it is so easy to click to another website. If a visitor travels to additional pages and they look different, they might believe they unexpectedly left your web site and then leave it all together.

In addition, with this level of branding throughout your web site there will be no doubt in your visitor’s mind where they are. You might even make it so a visitor bookmarking your web site will see the icon in his or her favorites, further imprinting the image. 7 Keys to a Brilliant Website

What Can a Brilliant Website Do for You?

Recently, I was looking for someone to repair a piece of antique furniture. So of course, I Googled “antique repair in my hometown USA” but all I found were antique shops. So I stopped by an antique shop in my hometown and asked if they did antique furniture repair or if they knew someone who did.

The lady’s response shocked me. She said, “No we don’t do that. There used to be a gentleman a couple doors down who repaired antiques but the damn internet put him out of business.” I left the shop scratching my head thinking, how did the internet put him out of business? If anything, it could have brought him more business.  I bet if he had put up a website and shared it with Google, I would have found his repair shop.

If you don’t have a website already, prepare to become obsolete. A website can work day and night for you. Here are some of the awesome things a website can do for you.

Create Awareness

Your clients expect you to have a website these days. They will most likely “Google” you if you don’t have a website on your business card before they will do business with you. You want to create awareness about the products and services that you provide.

Shorten the Sales Cycle

You can establish trust in you, your organization and your brand by providing a wealth of content. This can speed up the buying process.

Provide Access to Your Information

In the “old” days, business people would create marketing kits and public relations kits that they would mail to prospective clients or the media. A website can provide that information to anyone in the world minus the postage.

Referral Tools

Social media provides many opportunities to share your ideas, images, products, and

services with colleagues and potential clients.

Capture Leads

If you purchased a billboard ad, billboard signs on the side of road have no way of telling you who drove by and saw your ad.  A website can provide a way for you to collect interested buyers’ information from those who visited your site.

Establish You as an Authority in the Marketplace

A website can be your platform to share your expertise; use this power wisely.

1. Send the Right Message

Recently a friend asked me to take a look at her website. On the homepage, she had a large image of a corporate meeting room with the door shut and a glass window with semi-closed vertical blinds. Inside there is a meeting going on.  If you were to walk by a hallway and see this scene going on, what does it make you think?

A. “Oooo I’m Too Late for a meeting and they started without me.”

  1. “I Wasn’t Invited to an important meeting.”
  2.  “Shhhh there’s an important meeting going; on I better Go Away.”

Think about it. Do you want your visitors feeling: I’m too late –

I wasn’t invited – or the worst of all – Go Away?  These are the last feelings that you want your potential clients to have when they visit your website.

What kind of message does your website send when a potential client clicks into it?

Have a friend or family member take a look at your website and ask them to share her first reaction. Does she feel invited to come in and browse around?

Here are some ways to make sure you are sending the right message:

A.    Professional Quality Logo/Header

The online world is vast and competitive. While you can create your own website header, you should probably leave it to the professionals unless you happen to be a design whiz. Make an investment in your brand and your business by creating a strong and relevant header and logo to represent your business.

B.    Clear Tag Line / Benefit Statement

Your tagline, or often called your benefit statement, needs to be clear and easy for individuals to find on your website. It needs to share the key benefits that you

provide in a clear, quick manner.  An excellent example of a tagline is Paypal – “The world’s most-loved way to pay and be paid.”    A tagline is different than a slogan in that it should include a keyword that people would search use to search for your organization.

For example: Nike’s Slogan, “Just Do It”, is an awesome slogan. It works great in print and commercials, but it would not make a great tagline for a small shoe business just starting out because people would not enter “Just Do It” in search engines hoping to find your shoe business.

 C.    Testimonials

Testimonials are like money in the bank. They’re mini sales pitches made on your behalf by a satisfied customer. Who better to promote you and sell your services than an unbiased customer? Use these testimonials wisely and place them strategically on your website.

 D.    Use Great Headlines for Your Articles

Headlines are the titles of your articles or the content on your website. Headlines have an important role to play, and the more compelling and relevant they are the better. They’ll pull your prospect to your content. Practice writing headlines. Don’t be clever or cute; use practical wording in your headlines. Think about what questions you can answer for your clients and what problems you can solve for your clients.  You can test different headlines to determine what your prospective clients respond to by changing your wording to see what works best for your readers.

E.     Your Credentials

What are your credentials? What makes you an exceptional source for information, services or products? Consider how your credentials and expertise benefit your clients and include these on your website in the form of a biography or information on your “About” page.

Remember: your readers are always asking “What’s in it for me?”  So as your writing about your credentials, think about how your credentials help your clients.
